Gas Boiler Maintenance: A Guide
Central heating is the most easy and convenient way to heat your home – and it’s also one of the cheapest. Gas boiler maintenance is an important part of making sure your central heating system continues to work safely, effectively and economically.
Gas Boiler Maintenance: What You Can Do
As far as DIY gas boiler maintenanace goes, this is never a good idea. By law, boiler technicians must be qualified and registered on the Register of Gas Installers of Ireland (RGII) in order to carry out gas boiler maintenance, installation or repairs. The reason for this is simple – gas appliances, although very safe generally, can be very dangerous if tinkered with by somebody who doesn’t know what they are doing.
However, there are some things you can do yourself to make sure your boiler is running as smoothly as it can be.
• Keep it running: The prime time for gas boiler breakdowns is when autumn begins to take hold. Older boilers especially often seem to work on a ‘use it or lose it’ principle; to make sure your boiler switches on successfully come autumn when you really need it, switch it on periodically throughout the summer to keep it going. Once a week is enough to keep your boiler ticking over nicely.
• Adjust the controls: If you’re finding that heating your home is costing you more than it should, you may not be using the controls on your boiler and radiator in the most economical way. Sometimes just a small tweak in settings can save you a lot of money and make zero difference to how warm your home is. Consult your boiler manual for advice on how to find the optimum settings for your central heating system.
